Regina’s Bushwakker Brewpub is celebrating 25 years of award-winning brewing this year. The Regina Globe Theatre is celebrating 50 years of comedy, laughter and drama in 2016. It seems appropriate that the Bushwakker would brew a special commemorative beer as part of the Globe Theatre’s half century celebrations. Both organizations faced considerable challenges in their infancy such as public acceptance, public education of their products and services and financial limitations. Due largely in part to their strong passions to succeed, both organizations have become very recognizable institutions in the Regina cultural scene.
It was very important that the special commemorative beer not simply be a rebranding of an existing Bushwakker beer. Extensive consultations with Globe Theatre staff including artistic director, Ruth Smilie, as well as Globe Theatre history author and Saskatchewan Poet Laureate, Gerald Hill, were conducted in order to capture the essence of the Globe Theatre…through beer! Ruth identified that The Globe Theatre is Saskatchewan’s theatre and hoped our province’s people would embrace the theatre with the same intensity that they embraced their beloved Saskatchewan Roughriders. She also proudly spoke of how the theatre only employed three artistic director teams in its entire 50 year history. No small feat! The number “three” resonated with the Bushwakker brewing team. Original Globe Theatre artistic co-director, Ken Kramer, suggested that wheat should be incorporated as part of the commemorative recipe given its strong Saskatchewan symbolism. Barley was also a natural choice. The third significant ingredient chosen was saskatoon berries from Rocky Acre Orchards in Lipton, Saskatchewan. Thus the purple-hued, very refreshing and very Saskatchewan commemorative beer was born.
Globe Theatre staff also played a large role in the creation of the name for their namesake brew. The Globe Theatre 50th Anniversary “Berry Dramatic” Commemorative Wheat beer will be released at the Bushwakker Brewpub on Friday, June 17 at 5:30PM in regal fashion. A piper will lead a small cask of the special brew throughout the pub in a procession including Globe Theatre staff. Artistic director, Ruth Smilie, will wield the massive handmade wooden maul affectionately named, The Mighty Firkin Wakker, and will tap the keg to officially unveil their commemorative suds. Only 70 pints will be available from the firkin and then another few hundred will be available from the main aging tank. 250 souvenir bottles of the Berry Dramatic will also be released at this time. Currently there are no plans to brew this beer again. A true Saskatchewan keepsake complete with a special Globe Theatre 50th Anniversary beer label celebrating a true Saskatchewan cultural experience!
