12 Days of Drinksmas: Day 8

Taps Onlind: Negroni

On the eighth day of Drinksmas, TAPS Online poured for me…

A classic Italian cocktail based on the bitter orange-based, bright red Campari, the Negroni has grown quite trendy in Canada. It is very suitable for holiday drinking, since it has bright red Santa colours, plus spicy clove, citrus notes that remind the drinker of fruit cake and mulled cider or wine. This said, a Negroni is much more challenging than mulled wine. Essentially 1/3 Gin, 1/3 Red Vermouth, and 1/3 Campari, stirred with ice and garnished with an orange slice, it is quite boozy and bitter and, depending on the botanical intensity of the gin, very full flavoured. There is a medicinal aspect that is not for everyone, but, once you are on board, you’ll find that the Negroni is part of your weekly regimen. Don’t use a boring big brand gin for this – try a local gin like Thuya in New Brunswick, Ungava in Quebec, Spirit Bear from Urban Distillery in BC, or Dillon’s Unfiltered from Ontario.
